Cultural & Historical Sites

Shanghai's historic and cultural zones are part and parcel of the city's heritage. They shed important light on the city's past glory and are the groundwork of the city's cultural ethos.
Shanghai, which became a port in 1843, boasts myriad historic zones and buildings marooned in modern high-rises, giving Shanghai a typical metropolitan edge.
As part of its endeavor to preserve the city’s historical heritage, the municipal government has named 44 historical and cultural zones, including 12 in downtown area which cover an area of 27 square kilometers and 32 in the suburbs which cover an area of 14 square kilometers. The city also has 19 protected sites at the national level, 163 protected sites at the municipal level, and 632 buildings of high historic value.
The 12 historical and cultural zones named by the government include the Bund, People’s Square, Laochengxiang, Hengshan Road-Fuxing Road, Hongqiao Road, Shanyin Road, Jiangwan Road, Longhua, Tilanqiao, Nanjing West Road, Yuyuan Road and Xinhua Road.

People's Square Historic Area

The People's Square Historic Area occupies an area of 107 hectares in Huangpu District within the city's Inner Ring Road. The area is mainly comprised of a large number of public buildings surrounding the open area of People's Square and People's Park. It includes 16 protected historical and cultural sites and pieces of outstanding historical architecture.

The Old Shanghai/Lao Cheng Xiang Historic Area occupies an area of 199 hectares in Huangpu District within the city's Inner Ring Road. It includes 16 protected historical and cultural sites and pieces of outstanding historical architecture with strong traditional regional cultural characteristics.

The Hengshan Road-Fuxing Road Historic Area covers an area of 775 hectares within the city's Inner Ring Road across the four districts of Xuhui, Luwan, Jing'an, and Changning. The area is characterized by its various types of gardens and residential buildings, and has 223 protected historical and cultural sites and pieces of outstanding historical architecture.

Hongqiao Road Historic Area covers an area of 481 hectares in Changning District outside the city's Inner Ring Road. Characterized by country style villas and a beautiful natural environment, it's home to 12 protected historical and cultural sites and pieces of outstanding historical architecture.
