Founded in 1956, Shanghai Art Museum is one of the earliest art museums in new China. At the millennium of 2000, she moved into the present address.

Situated on the prosperous Nanjing Road, the building used to be the horse-racing club in old Shanghai. After liberation, it successively became Shanghai Museum and Shanghai library.

Covering an area of 17326 m2, new Shanghai Art Museum preserves this British style building's former exterior appearance of New Classicism, and renovates the interior according to art museum's functions. Interior design inherits European traditional language accentuating vivacious modern atmosphere and sets up a splendid simple and elegant art place. When audience enters the grand hall, looks up to the heavy structures, walks along the capacious stairway, feels the brass horse heads forged in 1930's,appreciates artists' outstanding works, you would surely recognize the vicissitude in Shanghai and perceive the attractive cultural fascination.
